How Plaid connections work
Plaid is the company that handles bank connections for thousands of fintech apps. When you link your HSA or another bank account in Reimbursable, you're using Plaid's secure flow — we never see your banking password.
What Plaid does
When you click Connect a bank account, you'll see a Plaid window where you sign in with your bank credentials. Plaid handles authentication, then gives Reimbursable a read-only access token tied to your bank.
We never see:
- Your username or password
- Your full account number
- Your routing number
- Anything else you type into the Plaid window
We do see:
- Account name and type (HSA, checking, savings, etc.)
- Last 4 digits of the account
- Current and available balance
- Transaction history (typically the last 24 months on first connect, then ongoing as new transactions clear)
That's it. Read-only access — we cannot move money or make changes to your account.
Supported institutions
Plaid supports thousands of US banks and HSA providers — Fidelity, Schwab, HSA Bank, Lively, HealthEquity, most major banks and credit unions. If your provider isn't supported, see "Adding a manual HSA/FSA account" for a workaround.
What we do with the data
- Balance appears on your Dashboard and updates whenever you sync.
- Transactions are scanned by our AI to spot likely medical expenses. Flagged transactions show up in Review Transactions for you to confirm.
- No marketing data — we don't sell, share, or use your bank data for anything other than running the app for you.
Disconnecting
Anytime you want to remove a bank, go to Connections and click Disconnect next to the account. We immediately revoke the Plaid token and stop pulling data. Existing transactions and expenses stay in your ledger — disconnecting doesn't delete history.
Re-connecting after a password change
If you change your bank password, the Plaid connection will eventually break and you'll see a Re-authenticate prompt. Click it, sign in again, and the connection resumes.
Premium-only
Plaid linking is a Premium feature. Free users can use manual accounts to track balances.
